How the Hush Score works

Edition: July 21, 2026

Deduced from what guests wrote

We do not ask hotels how quiet they are. We read guest reviews and count two things: mentions of quiet, calm, or silence, and mentions of noise, sound, or disturbance. Every candidate mention is then checked before it counts: it must be a guest's own words, genuinely about quietness or noise, with its meaning read in context, so a sentence like "the soundproofing is not the best" counts as a noise complaint, not a quiet mention. The Hush Score is built entirely from those verified counts.

How the score behaves

The score weighs quiet mentions against noise mentions on a 0 to 10 scale. Sleep-specific evidence ("slept so well", "kept us awake") counts more than generic ambience words ("peaceful", "loud"), and a sentence that praises quiet while flagging noise counts once on each side.

Scores are pulled toward the average of all scored hotels until a hotel has enough evidence to stand on its own. A hotel with three quiet mentions and no complaints scores well, but below one with thirty quiet mentions and no complaints, and no hotel reaches a perfect 10 on a handful of reviews. More evidence means more confidence and a higher ceiling.

The evidence gate

A hotel needs at least 3total quiet and noise mentions, counted from its guest reviews, before we publish a number. Below that threshold, we show the raw mentions on the hotel's page and withhold the score rather than guess. A hotel also needs a score of at least 5 out of 10 before we rank it as a quiet hotel or list it in a city page; below that, its page stays up, but it is left out of search listings and rankings.

Noise is never hidden

Every hotel page shows both quiet and noise mention counts, and the actual quotes behind them. A high score does not mean zero noise complaints, it means quiet mentions outweigh them by a wide margin.

Scores are not for sale

Hotels cannot pay to raise a Hush Score, remove a noise mention, or get listed ahead of a quieter competitor. Booking links earn a commission; the score does not move because of it.
